It's the most expensive time of the year...

It dawned on me that now Halloween is over, Christmas will arrive... in full swing... in the shops, in my adverts....  I wondered why I heard so many fireworks last night when it wasn't fireworks night, it was Halloween.  Halloween used to be for kids, a bit of dressing up, a carved pumpkin and sweets...when did the way we celebrate have to change into another expensive event?  We now need Halloween mugs, the house dressed up and fireworks...


... by 10am this morning eBay was notifying me of a pre black Friday sale.... What? I need to buy something today as well?  Just because it's a Friday?  Month end and payday with cash to spend?  That extra discount making me more inclined to buy that thing I kind of wanted because there's a sale on?


The advertising is relentless.  The world is now about you spending your money to make companies richer and the world go around.  Start to ask yourself whether you really need to spend your money.  Will people love you more if you have nicer things, more things, bigger things?  Who are you trying to impress?  I'll tell you what's nicer... it's having some money in the bank, no debts, and having genuine friends who love or like you for you, not because of what you have.


I'm Lady Frugal... I'm an advocate of the 'make do and mend' brigade, the 'watch the pennies' brigade, the recycling brigade, the 'live within your means' brigade.  Think I'm talking rubbish?  Think it's not possible to be happy without having a new TV at Christmas, or buying M&S food?  The latest car or phone?  It truly is possible!!  When you understand a few simple truths and get your head around them, you'll be able to live your life in financial comfort, without the continual need to shop.


In this site I'm going to share the things I've done, or maybe more not done, which have enabled me financial freedom from the rat race.  To have paid off my mortgage before I was 40, even though I was a single parent, and to be effectively retired before I was 50.  It is possible.  I want to help people get off the spend work treadmill, manage what they have better and just to be more content with the simple things in life...

Cutting down on your energy expenses isn't hard

Written  16th November 2024 I had some good news yesterday. It's a bit of a long story. I got an email from my energy supplier a few days ago about the upcoming price cap change so started looking at switching tarriffs / suppliers if there are better fixed rates around as I'm currently on a variable deal.  1st off I looked at my current providers offers. They were quoting amounts based on some random usage numbers but I wasn't sure where those numbers came from.  Were they based on my usage or just some industry standard ones that everyone gets forced to use?  I had a look through my online account and couldn't find my kwh usage per year anywhere on my account so I just decided it was easier to just trawl through all my bills for the last nearly 4 years and get the stats myself. Be careful what you wish for...

Written  27th December 2024 Since 1997 on a budget holiday to Tenerife, I thought I'd like to eventually live in the sun. Somewhere without the cold, gloomy British winters. And since then, I've always thought 'one day I'll stay somewhere with a sea view on holiday'. That would be so posh and amazing and just wow and I'd feel like 'I'm so great because I can afford to stay somewhere with a sea view'. I'm currently sat on my apartment balcony in Lagos, Portugal. I can't see the sea yet because it's still dark. But I can hear it. It's loud. Very loud. It's annoyingly loud. I wish I hadn't paid extra for a sea view and maybe had an apartment on the other side of the complex. D'oh!!!
