A little bit of nature does you good

Written 2nd July 2025

I'm still on jury duty and have been going for a 20 minutes walk around the block at lunchtime most days but today I just walked up to a bench nearby and sat there for a while. It's been 29 degrees the last few days but its only around 24 today so much nicer to be outside.

As I sat on the bench, a rat ran past me. Then a butterfly buzzed around me for a few seconds.  As I walked back to court a robin landed a few feet from me and stood there for a few seconds before he / she pecked something off of the ground then flew off. Yesterday a dunnock bird flew into my garden room which I had to help out because it just kept flying into the windows, the same with a blue tit last year and a huge dragonfly in my conservatory a couple of weeks ago.

It's such an amazing feeling when a wild animal allows you to help them. I've also seen lots of bees and flies and worms and snails this past few days.  I've also had deer, foxes, hedgehogs, mice and rats in my garden over the years. And I live in a town not the countryside.

I can't explain how nice it is to see these animals. To let them live their life without interference from me, or killing them because they are considered a nuisance or pest. There is so much life outside beyond humans, but you do have to slow down and open your eyes to see it. You have to be outside in nature.

I love nature programs. But its not just whales and dolphins or lions and penguins. These 'common' native insects, birds, rodents, wildlife are on our doorsteps.

Take a step outside, spend some time in nature. It is truly wonderful and amazing. And all life makes up our wonderful earth tapestry. Like the empty jar with pebbles, rocks, sand and water, all earth's creatures make our planet work as a whole and create the complete picture.

Slow down, smell the roses!!!
