How many direct debits do you have?

I have 6

  • Water

  • Gas and electricity

  • Council tax

  • TV licence

  • Mobile phone - sim only

  • Broadband


That's it. No loans, no credit card, no Klarna, no mortgage.


The older I get, the more numb I've gotten to the trends and bling of the media. The more I know that everyone else buying everything is making the world go around, keeping people in jobs and businesses successful.  If you want to live your whole life thinking that raping and pillaging our planet is ok that's fine. If you have no social conscience about what is happening to our planet because of us, because of greed, then crack on. At the end of the day, we wont be around to see how it turns out. To see what havoc we've wreaked. What species we've destroyed. What countries will be under water (the UK is an island by the way so why does no one care about rising sea levels?). The atrocities we've caused to other people if they stand in our way of making money or because they are different to us or because their country has something we want. 


We're all the same.


Did you know that the some of the water on earth is older than the sun? Or that some of it came from a comet or meteor that banged into earth millions or billions of years ago. Did you know that all the water on earth we have is all we'll ever have? Naturally recycled.  The water we drink could be up to 4.4 billion years old.


You don't need a new pair of shoes every month, or new furniture because yours is not fashionable. Be grateful for what you have, look after your things, be careful with your money and cut back on the frivolous spending. Think about how much happier you'll feel with less debt. How much more content you will feel with saying to hell with the marketing and the media, I'm going to look after my body by not eating junk convenience food, I'm not going to bin everything that I could fix, I'm not going to buy a new dress because I've got 15 already and do your little bit to save our home planet from yet more waste.

Cutting down on your energy expenses isn't hard

Written  16th November 2024 I had some good news yesterday. It's a bit of a long story. I got an email from my energy supplier a few days ago about the upcoming price cap change so started looking at switching tarriffs / suppliers if there are better fixed rates around as I'm currently on a variable deal.  1st off I looked at my current providers offers. They were quoting amounts based on some random usage numbers but I wasn't sure where those numbers came from.  Were they based on my usage or just some industry standard ones that everyone gets forced to use?  I had a look through my online account and couldn't find my kwh usage per year anywhere on my account so I just decided it was easier to just trawl through all my bills for the last nearly 4 years and get the stats myself. Be careful what you wish for...

Written  27th December 2024 Since 1997 on a budget holiday to Tenerife, I thought I'd like to eventually live in the sun. Somewhere without the cold, gloomy British winters. And since then, I've always thought 'one day I'll stay somewhere with a sea view on holiday'. That would be so posh and amazing and just wow and I'd feel like 'I'm so great because I can afford to stay somewhere with a sea view'. I'm currently sat on my apartment balcony in Lagos, Portugal. I can't see the sea yet because it's still dark. But I can hear it. It's loud. Very loud. It's annoyingly loud. I wish I hadn't paid extra for a sea view and maybe had an apartment on the other side of the complex. D'oh!!!
