Everything you buy will eventually be binned
Written 1st December 2024
I have a house clearance business. I get to see hundreds of homes where people have died, are going into a care home, are emigrating, are getting divorced, are downsizing etc etc.
Believe me when I say that at the end of your life, all that will be left is a load of things you bought or were given or you made yourself during the course of your time on earth.
And more often than not, the person clearing your house will just want it gone. It won't mean anything to anyone else (unless it is valuable) and it'll end up being binned. So unless those things you're holding onto are used or precious to you, why keep it? Why buy it? If you don't use it? Or look at it?
And we all have exactly the same stuff... mugs, a dustpan and brush, a bed, sofa, clothes, a microwave, a vacuum cleaner, a load of linen and towels, clothes, Christmas decorations or books. Big house or small, council estate or gated community, young or old, we all need the same basic things to furnish a home.
I can't tell you how some people live. I'm appalled how some people let their family live. I'm often really shocked by just how much stuff people have and it's honestly very rare people are minimalist or don't have a loft or garage full of 'junk'.
Perhaps it is boredom, that shopping is just something to do to pass the time so we end up with all this stuff we don't use. Perhaps it is the advertising, making us feel like we must keep buying more. I haven't figured it out, but I do know that you have no idea what goes on behind closed doors, or the facade of big houses, expensive cars or branded handbags.
Stop thinking that having more will make you immortal, or make the quality of your life better, because it really really won't. And it will be a never ending hiding to nothing if material things are where you get your happiness / self esteem from. Stop believing the marketing hype, stop investing in other companies profits, start investing in yourself and your future financial health - Team Me!
