Always do your maths

I had to buy loo rolls this week.

I always buy the largest multipack of Asda own brand loo roll. A few years ago they stopped making the 24 roll pack and started doing a 12 pack but with more sheets per roll. I assumed it would still be the most economical way to buy them until last week when I just thought I'd check compared to the 16 pack they do.

So I'm stood in Asda with my calculator out, madly tapping away, feeling like a bit of an obsessive weirdo because of course the big 12 pack with 'BIG SAVER' printed on the packaging was going to be the best buy. But I just had to check.


I'm quite good at maths so could easily work out the price per sheet and I was flabbergasted to calculate that the 16 pack is actually cheaper per sheet. Flabbergasted and annoyed with myself for never checking this before.  That's several years I've been paying more than I needed to.


A bit of me wants to say 'shame on Asda' for that misleading packaging. But they didn't lie, not really. It is more economical than buying a pack of 2 or 4 so they aren't technically lying.


So, the moral of the story is, just because something says 'big saver' or 'great value' or similar on the packaging or like me, you always assume the biggest multipack will be the most economical purchase option, always check.

Cutting down on your energy expenses isn't hard

Written  16th November 2024 I had some good news yesterday. It's a bit of a long story. I got an email from my energy supplier a few days ago about the upcoming price cap change so started looking at switching tarriffs / suppliers if there are better fixed rates around as I'm currently on a variable deal.  1st off I looked at my current providers offers. They were quoting amounts based on some random usage numbers but I wasn't sure where those numbers came from.  Were they based on my usage or just some industry standard ones that everyone gets forced to use?  I had a look through my online account and couldn't find my kwh usage per year anywhere on my account so I just decided it was easier to just trawl through all my bills for the last nearly 4 years and get the stats myself. Be careful what you wish for...

Written  27th December 2024 Since 1997 on a budget holiday to Tenerife, I thought I'd like to eventually live in the sun. Somewhere without the cold, gloomy British winters. And since then, I've always thought 'one day I'll stay somewhere with a sea view on holiday'. That would be so posh and amazing and just wow and I'd feel like 'I'm so great because I can afford to stay somewhere with a sea view'. I'm currently sat on my apartment balcony in Lagos, Portugal. I can't see the sea yet because it's still dark. But I can hear it. It's loud. Very loud. It's annoyingly loud.
