What better thing is there to do than spending an afternoon pottering in the garden with your best friend?
Runner beans, my friends - runner beans need cloning! They have the right idea of working together for their mutual benefit. Each one gives support to the next; leaning and growing on each other.
They don’t know the runner bean plant next to them, but they let it grow up them anyway. In turn, they meander together along the poles. They don’t care what shade of green their leaves are, they don’t care how tall they are, and they don’t care if their neighbour gets more light, food, or water, or grows more flowers.
They are but a bean. We consider them non-thinking, stupid, inanimate things. But in 16 weeks, they grow from a seed to a plant, grow flowers, then produce seed pods and new seeds. All they have literally done is grow to ensure their species' future. I suppose they keep certain bugs and flies alive with their presence too. But it’s genuinely cool that inside their seed pod is the exact DNA required to create a perfect plant and carry on their species.
Runner beans have the answer. Can we clone their genes?
Humans seem to have stopped caring about the future of our species. We are only concerned with the short-term gratification of having stuff. And, more importantly, showcasing the images of our stuff for people we don't even really know. Why are we not truly concerned with the global issues? Not a local or personal one, but the global crisis. One that doesn’t just affect everyone on our planet right now, but dictates the fact that we are going to see the end of our species if we don’t start collectively doing something about it.
Oy, you! - rich person, rich country. Let’s stop and sort this out.
You think it won’t happen. You think we're too clever, or that there is simply too much money to be made. But if you thought that in 30 to 40 years we would have water rationing, and you’d have to go into town to collect your water in a barrel... can you actually visualise the way our lives would be? I’m 53; chances are I’ll be almost dead by the time the shit really hits the fan. But if you’re 40, 30, or 20, you will still be in the prime of your life. Do you really want to live like that? Do you want that for your kids, your grandchildren and their grandchildren?
Some countries get all riled up about legal abortion. Tell me how we can knowingly create a world that will be bloody terrible for us all and not get riled up about that instead?
All of us, I don’t care who you are, secretly want something amazing to happen to us in our lifetime. We want to be a hero. We've seen all the movies, we all want it deep down. Well, you can be. All you need to do is open your eyes to the fact that us clever humans have gone off the rails a bit. We sacrifice nature - the very thing that keeps our planet stable - for money. We don’t have to make every single aspect of our lives about money and possessions.
Surely we can all be heroes if we get all the global powers together and just sensibly formulate a plan. Forget the losses to our businesses and economies. Forget making stronger cannabis or improving Botox injections. Let’s get all the best brains together to sort out our water shortage. One thing. All in it together, just like the runner bean.
WE can be the generation of civilisation that made the WHOLE world a better place and ensured the future of our species on this planet.
Most of us won’t be remembered after a couple of generations anyway let’s be honest. How many people online have over a million followers these days? We’ll all be just a tiny, forgotten figment of the internet in a few generations' time. Let’s be remembered collectively for sorting out this worldwide problem instead.
Remember, if we don’t sort this out NOW, our way of life will change irreparably and eventually we will die out on this planet. The Earth will take a while to recover, yes, but it will survive. And it won’t care that we didn’t. It will keep on turning for billions more years, and something else may come along.
Will they be thinking humans? Will they be more intelligent? Hardly likely, if as a species we died out because of our own stupidity and greed. No, the Earth will reset. It’ll be left to the animals, or cells, or maybe just plants to inherit the earth. The laws of nature mean life will start down a completely new path, but we won't be around to see it. So that means that will be it for us. Finito.
And the worst part is, if there are no other life forms like animals (us included) living in the rest of the universe, then that might be it. Forever. Or at least for a very long time.
Be a hero to the planet. Be a runner bean. We all owe it to our species.
Disregard the cash.
Forget the Likes!
Save the planet.
